Ice Dome in Oberstdorf
The Ice Dome in Oberstdorf is on its way to establish itself as one of the top summer training camps. For the third year, the camp attracted international top skaters as well as children. Since I was in Nuremberg not so far away from Oberstdorf I went for one afternoon (on July 6) together with Irene. She lives closer to Oberstdorf and went a few times more and also to the exhibition gala on July 13.
We first watched some ice dance and I was especially happy to see Christina and William Beier back on the ice! They were practising the “Yankee Polka”, one of the compulsory dances for next year. There were also Carolina and Daniel Herrmann from Dortmund with their coach Vitali Schultz and Kamila Hajkova/David Vincour from the Czech Republic with their coach Rostislav Sinicyn. It was also nice to see the Czech couple again after they had missed Worlds due to his severe illness.
When we walked to the main rink, we run into Alexander König, a former pair skater and now coach who was working with children here. He was one of the coaches of the Ice Dome.
At the main rink, we were able to watch the practice of the international top skaters with Stéphane Lambiel, Carolina Kostner, Tomas Verner, Kristoffer Berntsson, German Champion Kristin Wieczorek, Ari-Pekka Nurmenkari and Michael Chrolenko as well as four others whom I didn’t recognize. Stéphane was working on his new short program with choreographer Salomé Brunner. It is a kind of modern Tango (meanwhile the music was identified as “Carne Cruda”), and it’s a typical choice for Stéphane: a new music that we haven’t heard before, intense and emotional choreography. Stéphane told us that this was his last day in Oberstdorf, after that he was off to Japan for some shows. He said that he is feeling very good and he seemed happy and relaxed. Kristoffer Berntsson practiced a new short as well, to a Michael Jackson medley. Kristin Wieczorek had a new program to a medley of different music including “Pink Panther”. She was working hard on her step sequence. I didn’t take notes during the practice, so I don’t remember any more details.
We had a brief chat with Stanick Jeannette, who was attending the camp as a coach. It’s nice to see him working with other skaters and hopefully passing on some of his individual style to them.
We also met Karel Zelenka, who didn’t participate in the Ice Dome but had come to practice here individually with his father.
Our last activity was interviewing Kristoffer Berntsson, and the complete version of this interview will also appear on our website
